History of Manheim, Pennsylvania

The borough of Manheim, named for the German town Kerpen-Manheim, dates back to the years preceding the Revolutionary War. Manheim’s founding is attributed predominantly to Henry William Stiegel. Stiegel contributed the most to the new town’s development with his background in glass and iron making. His goal was to create an industrial community in Manheim. He established Stiegel Glassworks in 1762. Unfortunately, he was not able to make his ideas into a financially feasible manufacturing system and was forced to sell the development in 1775. There were several attempts to reopen the glassworks factory, but it was shut down for good in 1780, shortly after the American Revolution. After the Revolution, Manheim grew as a farming town with various agricultural businesses stimulating its economy. It expanded further with the introduction of various transportation routes as well. For over 100 years, beginning in 1834, Manheim was labeled as a Second Class Township. But then, in 1952, a community vote resulted in its status being changed to a First Class Township. From that point, Manheim began to transition from a traditional rural farming town to a more suburban community. Today it is an expansive little town with all kinds of charming attractions.

The wife of Henry William Stiegel, one of Manheim’s founders, was named Elizabeth. She had two daughters, one of which was also named Elizabeth. And when Henry was left widowed by his first wife, he remarried with another woman named Elizabeth.
In 1952, Manheim was awarded the title of First Class Township by popular vote. Today, it remains the only township to hold that status in all of Lancaster County.
Root’s Country Market and Auction, located just south of Manheim, is the oldest single family-run country market in Lancaster County.
