History of Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania

Elizabethtown was established in 1753, when Barnabas Hughes, an immigrant from County Donegal, Ireland, purchased the land from Thomas Harris. The town is said to be named for Hughes’s wife, Elizabeth. The town was officially incorporated in 1827. In the 1830s, a railroad line was run through the area, aiding in the town’s growth. Elizabethtown’s economy was primarily based on agriculture until the 1900s when it began moving towards more industrial means of production. The Klein Chocolate Company was opened along with various shoe factories throughout the next century. World War II also played a major role in the growth of Elizabethtown. In the second half of the twentieth century following the war, the town’s population doubled. Today, Elizabethtown is home to many businesses including White Oak Mills, a Masterfoods USA plant, Continental Press, and Messick’s Farm and Construction Equipment.
